Here's an idea for publications like the Washington Post that have a paywall. 

Publish a summary of every article, one or two paragraphs. Show that to readers who aren't logged in. 

Here's an example on Taegan Goddard's site. I pointed to his summary. It has the gist of the story, probably enough for most people. You all could do that yourselves.
