It's gone too far, time to contemplate, then compromise
by Dave Winer Tuesday, August 2, 2016

This is a political message.

I watched Chris Hayes this evening trying to get Senator Flake from Arizona, a Republican, to condemn other Republicans for not withdrawing their endorsements of Trump based on the craziness with Trump and the Khan family.

I watched Hayes repeatedly drill the guy, who has said he won't vote for Trump himself, and I wanted Flake to say -- Hold on a minute, you're a Democrat, right? So why are you politicizing this poor family? When is it too much? Where is your line? (Any pretense that Hayes is not a Democrat is ridiculous.)

And then the two Khans were on Lawrence O'Donnell. They've been on news shows continually all weekend. I couldn't even watch the beginning of it. I wanted to tell them that it's time to stop talking publicly about Trump and his black soul. They said what had to be said. We understand. Let this whole thing die down now. To prolong this is to make a mockery of their pain and the memory of their son. It's time to regain perspective. Quiet things down. And then let's talk about all this in a week.

Because this election has gone far enough. Let's all be adults about this.

There are so many imbalances, they're trying to extract the most minute truth from Hillary about the emails yet we still haven't seen Trump's tax returns, and they're denying they put an exemption for Russian hostility re Ukraine in the Republican platform. That's so sinister. Trump has a lobbyist running his campaign and he's obviously manipulating Trump's inability to even govern his own campaign to manipulate the policy of the Republican Party. If it goes much further this will be happening to the government of the United States.

Note: Trump cannot even govern his own campaign.

Father Khan's statement about rising above politics was very right. And the Democrats need to do it too now. We all need to step back and regain our perspective.

The Democrats need to sit down and negotiate with the Republican leadership in Congress. Privately. Come to some kind of agreement that allows many Republicans to vote for Clinton. Compromise now. Let's take this opportunity to really unify. Let the campaign run out. No debates. Trump can tour all he wants. It's over.

This really has gone far enough.
