In 2012 as the election was approaching, I wrote a piece that said I was okay with Romney winning. Here's the opening paragraph.
If Romney wins, I'm okay with it, because Obama has run a decent campaign, and a mostly honest one. And if people prefer Romney, then we deserve what we get. And I think it'll be really radical. There's a huge difference in direction for us based on who wins this election.
I guess now it's time to write the piece about Trump winning.
So here goes..
If Trump wins the financial markets will go crazy.
There's a pretty good chance that Trump has made private deals with other governments, including Russia, and that will play out in American foreign policy.
Even before he takes office his election will have a chilling effect on free speech. People who are reluctant to criticize him now will be even more careful. People who have openly criticized him will try to clean it up.
Racists and anti-semites will come out of from hiding. There might be more of them than we realize.
It's hard to imagine how fucked up things will be.
With all that in mind, I will be okay with it, largely because I won't have to deal with this alone. Everyone will. Misery will have lots of company. I suspect many of the people who vote for him will be penalized too. So I will have the gratification of knowing that I voted for Hillary Clinton, the only person who stands between us and madness.
