InfoWorld: Microsoft to support HTML and XML in the next version of Office.

It's an interesting announcement. Word already does a great job of supporting HTML. I now understand why they want XML, for the ability to store more info to their docs than HTML can support. Makes sense. Further, it's a milestone because now all of Microsoft's app file formats will be open. This stopped lots of compatible development in the past. It used to be virtually impossible to write a spreadsheet that could read Excel files. It won't be after they support HTML and XML.

Upside: McNealy is shooting blanks.

"Scott still doesn't get it," says an executive with a Sun ally, who squirmed through McNealy's speech. "He's spending more time on toys than on mission-critical apps. He doesn't see that these guys want a better story from Sun than his 'Evil Empire' thing."
