Frontier 5.0a4 Full VersionToday, Oct. 10, 1997, we're releasing the first full version of Frontier 5 for Macintosh. This is the fourth public release, and the first one to include a full installation of Frontier. Previous releases have been upgrades, but now you don't need to go through the upgrade process to start working in Frontier 5. Who this release is for If you haven't looked at Frontier before, or if you're taking a second look, this release is for you. It's a "thrill-seeker" release. Frontier 5 is not finished yet. There are a few bugs and some new features still to implement. But it's a chance to get involved, to help us put together Frontier 5.0 for Macintosh. This release is also for experienced users who don't want to go through the upgrade process, or aren't ready to start using Frontier 5 full-time but want to check it out. Goals of this release We'd like to define what the shipping Frontier 5 root looks like. There are cross-platform considerations. There are some old features to remove and new ones to bake in. What's new in Frontier 5 If you've looked at Frontier before, you'll notice that we're changing many things. For instance, we have file-based scripts, outlines, and text windows. Frontier works more like other applications. We have a new cross-platform file format. If you stay in Beginner mode, you never have to see the object database. In Expert mode, you'll find that the object database can now be browsed as an outline. Mailing list Please join our discussion on the Frontier-Work mailing list. That's the place to ask questions and report bugs. That's where new releases will be announced. It's the place to talk to other users and to our developers. Download Frontier 5 The Download page will get you started. After that, ask questions on the mailing list. Also look at Quick Start for Experienced Scripters. Even though this page is geared toward Frontier experts, it may answer some of your questions. But if parts of it don't make sense to you, don't worry about it -- you can go ahead and ask questions on the mailing list.
