As often you raise interesting points.
It is obvious that thoughts from the CHAOS-area of science learn that most interesting phenomena occur at the boundaries between two masses.
So the more one interfaces with others (the more open you are) the more interesting things will happen, the more things will take off, get momentum.
The interfaces can be done like Microsoft (one product and many users) or Frontier (one product and many other products, used by many users) The number of interesting things will be much higher in the latter example.
An other point raised was: what will be next? IF the WEB is a totaly new concept, it is for presentation only. It created a new level of abstraction to present information on many platforms.
The next step in my opinion must be the creation of the next level of abstraction: the Document. So all information can be used everywhere on many platforms. (This is possible via SGML, Standard Generalised Markup Language. Information meaning Data plus the Context/Meaning)
