I'm pretty sure that the software exists already. A friend of mine was talking about how it's on the verge of being economical to buy to 100- or 200-CD changer and control it from a Mac. Implication: if you've got the $$$, you can do it today. Do a little more probing and I think you'll find your holiday present!
