To this day I wonder why so many companies licensed Java from Sun right after it was introduced. You can't license Java! It's just a language. You can license the Java VM, but that's different. Netscape says that they licensed Java and then build their own VM from scratch. So why pay Sun if you're not going to use their code? Most companies seemed to think that it's illegal to write your own Java VM without Sun's permission.
