It may be true but it's crazy. NeXT has little to offer Apple. Their software environment is a one-of-a-kind cult product that never garnered market share or momentum, lurching from angel to angel as the money ran out. They have no operating system capable of replacing the MacOS without losing all the applications, which is Apple's big problem. Apple needs to jack up their API's and insert a modern kernel underneath -- replacing the bottom, not the top, layer of the OS.

NeXT's software runs only on Unix machines and Windows NT. Apple's Unix is moribund though. Maybe Apple plans to host OPENSTEP and WebObjects on the Apple skunkworks Linux port? That would make web servers work, but wouldn't solve their OS problem.

Maybe Apple just wants to regain the patented Jobs "Reality Distortion Field"...
