I like the UMPA approach, ask the surveyee a question only developers can answer.

An almost unlimited supply could be "What is the trap number for _AddDrive?" (ObiWan answers it immediately ;-).

You could ask people what they develop in (Pascal/C, Frontier, HyperCard, AppleScript, whatever) and have different questions for each class of use. And then you've got even mroe interesting numbers to play with ;).
