Dave,
Check how much memory Netscape is taking right now...
5 megs? 7 megs? 10 megs? It's taking quite a bit for a silly little web-browser isn't it? Oh wait, it does mail and news too. And soon it will do VRML (on powermacs it does I believe) and on and on and on.
I gotta bring the example into your view...
You see, OpenDoc isn't a windows killer. OpenDoc is the next step for a decent operating system. Why do I need one spell checker in MacWrite Pro and another in FileMaker? (I don't enjoy using feature-heavy products.)
You see, OpenDoc is about choices. You pick your graphic viewer... an application doesn't support the new graphics format? Ha, not anymore, I got a viewer part for it.
You see, that's the ticket. More importantly, it allows developers to specialize. Downsizing for computer programs. Remember Netscape 1.0. Then three months later 1.1, then a few months later 2.0. How long is 3.0 taking? It's gotten big hasn't it? Unmanagable.
OpenDoc isn't the Windows killer--heck Apple wants OpenDoc to be multiplatform. OpenDoc is the BigApp killer. OpenDoc is the savior of developers. You want a new feature, pop it in. Everything is a plug-in. One API.
Besides, Apple has an load of time and energy (not to mention money) invested in OpenDoc. It's not some great vaporware... it's out there and we're just waiting for the parts now.
