I have to disagree with you here. First of all, Apple automatically gets Metrowerks changes to the Java VM since both are Sun licensees and by the license agreement, all changes must be fed back to Sun. If they like what they see, they can integrate it.
Second, Apple has licensed Natural Intelligence's Roaster Java VM which was written specifically for the Macintosh and it not a port of Solaris or Windows code. It is already the fastest VM by many of the benchmarks on the net and is certainly the easiest and most flexible to integrate into applications. I'm surprised you would pontificate this so publicly given our recent conversations.
I am not saying anything against Metrowerks here. I have no doubt that Metrowerks saved Apple with the PowerMacs shipped. I love their C/C++ product and I use it every day. But just because they have the best C++ product out for the Mac doesn't mean they are the only game in town for Java.
Finally, remember that putting Java into the OS is good for companies like Metrowerks, Symantec and Natural Intelligence. We can all focus on providing the best developer tools for our customers and not spend so much time coming up with 3 or 4 different implentations of the same standard.
