>>" For me it was a semi-sad piece. I grew up with DEC hardware. The PDP-11 was a gorgeous machine. The VAX was even better. In the interview Palmer talks about how the MicroVax could have been the standard that Intel chips are now"<< I remember back in high school viewing DEC as a mondo place to possibly work -- they were a powerhouse back then --- number 2 to mighty IBM. Somehow I got my hands on a DEC Rainbow manual, and I lovingly studied all the specs dreaming of the possibilities. I probably still have the manual somewhere. Later, I worked one summer as an operator on a VAX 11-780 -- what a blast. DEC could have been king. They ruled the scientific computing roost at a time when the only computers outside of mainframes were in the science labs, and at a time when the only dudes diddling with PCs were hardcore.
