Given your Apple issues, you might want to see how microsoft is handling a not totally different situation. Look at the press release at

This involves scripting within individual apps rather than a system wide language. VBA is the macro language within Excel and Power Point and it was announced long ago it would be in the next version of Word. The two leading providers of macro languages for other products are Summit (about 100 companies) and Mystic River (about 75 companies). The VBA technology is better in many ways and MS could have just ignored Summit and Mystic River (so far as I can tell) but they didn't.
