Workflow Notes

Here's an email I sent to the Frontier-central and Frontier-XML lists on 2/15/98:

Workflow notes

Yesterday I did a long overdue rebuild of the Fat Pages site:

http://www.scripting.com/fatpages/

I tested all the scripts I could easily test, that was most of them. I fixed them so they work with Frontier 5.

For a list of the changes see:

Workflow suites re-released

In the process of rebuilding the site, I also re-released several suites related to workflow. This is an important direction, it's not been enhanced since last May, it's time to take another look.

http://www.scripting.com/fatpages/suites/peopleSuite.html

http://www.scripting.com/fatpages/suites/custodySuite.html

http://www.scripting.com/fatpages/suites/webEditSuite.html

Look at these suites as examples of how one would organize workflow information in the object database, and nothing more. We want to discuss the data structures. Once we have agreement that we have the right way to organize information about people, custody and remote web page editing, then we can start supporting all the interfaces needed to make workflow happen in the user base.

To restate, I see UserLand's role here as organizing the object database information. We want to see lots of different interfaces developed.

Since one of the interfaces we want to support is WebDAV, I'd like to see the discussion happen on the Frontier-XML list. I'm cross-posting to Frontier-central so everyone who's interested can be in the loop.

Let's do some great development here!

Dave Winer

PS: These suites build on odbServer, which we're phasing out. The new implementations will go thru the XML-based RPC interfaces. They're going to roll into our Fat Pages site too, watch Scripting News for pointers.

PPS: The source for the site is on the siteSource page linked into the site outline. It's a good starting point for your own fat pages site.
