Dear Google, Scripting News, this site, is a historic site. It goes back to Oct 1994, and records many of the events that happened in the growth of the web, from the point of view of an award-winning software developer. This blog not only documents all my own work, but covers the struggle between open systems like the web, and big corporation ownership. It's a dramatic story, there was a time when the NYT didn't stand up for the first amendment, we had plenty to say about that -- they didn't understand but we did -- their home was going to be here soon, I guess they couldn't imagine it. We also covered the birth of Google itself, and chronicled its roots in the web to this sad place where now Google has completely forgotten what enabled their success. If you all had to submit to the mind of a current-day Google, you'd be pretty fucked. I lived for 31 years in Silicon Valley. Started two companies. My parties were events. I know the character of the web, I rejected it, and moved back east and continued creating. I have to no time for these power plays. You don't own the web. If I'm the last person to tell you that, so be it. But this site, scripting.com, which I am very proud of, will never bend its knee to the power of Google. This site is, as far as I know, secure. It doesn't have membership, we don't sell anything. No ads. It's a freaking blog. We care about our readers. I think a little of that spirit should still be somewhere deep in the heart of Google. Let's work together. It'll be more fun, and will build instead of tear us apart. Dave Winer
