The first Star Wars is awful

Yes, I will go see the new Star Wars movie. But...

In preparation I tried to watch the first one. The one that was just entitled Star Wars. I remember seeing it in Madison on a snowy winter evening with a bunch of my friends and being blown away. But today, in 2015, it's unwatchable. Terrible movie! I can't enumerate the ways it's so awful.

It's like a bad Star Trek episode. And there weren't any bad Star Trek episodes. I can't imagine what we thought was so great about this movie.

So I go into the new Star Wars movie with low expectations. I expect a childish movie, with weak stupid characters. I expect a movie that congratulates itself from the first scene at merely existing.

So why post this? First, I want to get this on the record before seeing the new movie. And I want to ask any of my readers if any of the subsequent movies are worth watching? I went to the second and probably the third movies, but my memory is very dim. I know I stopped going after a while because I thought they were foolish movies. If you had to pick one of the previous movies as the best of the lot, which would you pick?

  • For me, the rule of thumb is to avoid anything George Lucas personally directed; that means all three prequels, and the original Star Wars. I've watched Empire Strikes Back in recent memory, and it holds up far better. Returns of the Jedi isn't as strong (Ewoks) but delivers a relatively satisfying conclusion.
