Listened to Terry Gross's interview with David Bowie, from 2002. 

I learned that sometimes an interviewer should just start with this: "What's up?" And let the other person take it from there. 

Bowie was very direct in this interview, but Gross kept trying to steer him back to the fanboy story. A much more interesting interview would have been the one Bowie was trying to have.
