News and commentary from the cross-platform scripting community.
Mail Starting 5/23/97 For another interesting take on Microsoft (and Bill Gates by inference), read the new New Yorker article on Nathan Mhyrvold. I gave Microsoft too much credit. They didn't just miss the potential of the Internet (while collecting their billions during the years of Win 3.x, roughly 1990-94) they MISSED IT. Puts an interesting new light on their current strategies.

Re:A change would do you goodAs for Sun? Hah. Their new verbose multi-page ad for Java in PC Week misspells the name of a commonly used scripting language as "Pearl." Just proves that if your marketing strategy is based on total perfection -- as "100% Pure Java [tm]" must be in order to achieve it supposed write-once- run-everywhere-[safely maybe] philosophy -- even the trivial little errors can ruin things noticeably.
see you in the future
The press has couched this battle in terms of the CDF format. As far as I can make out this is typical press confusion. The real battle is not about the CDF files which, as you point out, don't really amount to anything. The real battle is between dynamic HTML, the object model, standard (in the box) animation and effects ActiveX controls which Microsoft is pushing and the Java based Castanet approach which Netscape is pushing. Development of the content is the real battle, not the directory format, although it would be nice if they agreed on both.

Re:Saving Netscape's PrideWhy do you think that Microsoft never came out with a CAD product? Is the market too small? And does the same answer go for the high-end document production market, like Photoshop especially?

Re:A change would do you goodYou forgot to mention that Marimba does not have a MacOS version of their Transmitter. That means it will get no support from Web developers who are working exclusively with MacOS servers.
