iPhone4 vs HTC-EVO video creator likely to lose job at Best Buy

By Cyberian Muse on Friday, July 02, 2010 at 9:29 PM.

If you've ever been to Best Buy before, you will probably have noticed that the so-called "Geek Squad" is pretty much the most incompetent group of tech poseur n00bs ever to walk to planet. It seems this is an image Best Buy wants to uphold, as the one Geek Squad employee to exhibit some competency level beyond that of a Comcast tech-support representative, is now being forced out of his job. Permanent link to this item in the archive.

The offense: Making this amazing viral video illustrating the irrationality of Apple consumers: Permanent link to this item in the archive.

>>>"Unless you live under a rock or donŐt enjoy funny things, you have probably seen the hilarious video called iPhone 4 versus HTC EVO that depicts a potential iPhone 4 customer dealing with a salesman trying to showcase the features the EVO has over the new iPhone. Permanent link to this item in the archive.

Best Buy however, did not find it enjoyable, and they are now trying to fire the employee who made the video, 25 year old Brian Maupin from Kansas City, Missouri. He apparently has been selling phones for the company for three and a half years but is now suspended indefinitely because of the video and the attention itŐs gotten.  Permanent link to this item in the archive.

In his words: Permanent link to this item in the archive.

They felt it disparaged a brand they carried (iPhone/Apple) as well as the store itself and were fearful of stockholders & customers being turned off to Best Buy Mobile."<<< Permanent link to this item in the archive.

If Best Buy had any concept whatsoever of what it's present consumer base enjoys, they would have used this video to its advantage to enhance its image. Instead, it threw a public tantrum. If I was a Best Buy stockholder, I would realize this company is out-of-touch, at best, and pull out. Permanent link to this item in the archive.
