Home > Archive > 2010 > April > 1Laptop killer? Seriously...Thursday, April 01, 2010 by Dave Winer.Walt Mossberg says there's a serious possibility that the soon-to-ship iPad is a laptop killer. I just thought it would be a good idea to mark this moment. Walt has used an iPad, I have not -- so he has an advantage over me. But let me put my stake in the ground. I use my laptop for so many things that an iPad can't do. Okay so the iPad isn't designed for me, say the Apple dingbats. So then you have to qualify the "killer" thing. The iPad is a laptop-killer for the people it's designed for. They say it's designed for people who aren't totally comfortable with windows and menus etc. It happens that I know a few of those people. Most of them don't even have iPhones (I think they probably should). So please don't tell me iPad kills laptops. Another point of view worth considering. BTW, my iPad is coming on Saturday. I look forward to trying it out. But seriously this bullshit the supposed big thinkers are pushing is spoiling the fun. It's as if they had a bunch of retards review the latest episode of The Wire or Lost and publish their reviews, full-of-spoilers, before any of us have had a chance to watch it. Sort of takes the fun out of it, at least for adults. If you just want to believe that Apple can do no wrong and everything they ship is a massive disrupter of everything that came before then I guess you like how these things ship. Me, I wish they'd forget the pundits and just ship the things and STFU and let us figure it out. That's the way it's going to go anyway. |
