8:42 PM:   For iPhone, the ‘New’ Is Relative. When the iPhone 3G goes on sale in AT&T and Apple stores, iPhone Mania will be considerably more muted. That's partly because the mystery is gone, partly because the AT&T service costs more and partly because there aren't many new features in what Apple is calling the iPhone 3G. David Pogue.

For all the hoopla involving AT&T's speedier, third-generation network, I couldn't access 3G in parts of my northern New Jersey neighborhood and elsewhere. 8:36 PM:   Newer, Faster, Cheaper iPhone 3G. The base version of the new iPhone costs $199 — half the $399 price of its predecessor; the higher-capacity version is now $299, down from $499. Yet, this new iPhone is much, much faster at fetching data over cellphone networks because it uses a speedy cellular technology called 3G. And it now sports a GPS chip for better location sensing. 8:24 PM:   Bit.ly Is a Big Deal URL Shortener. Without registering for an API key, developers can shorten URLs, expand previously-shortened URLs, and get data about a Bit.ly URL. The information Bit.ly makes available includes the number of clicks, the referring sources of those clicks, and three sizes of thumbnails of the resulting web page. WebMonkey.

2:18 PM:   With Lively, Google tries its own 'Second Life' Google's Lively project will look very familiar to those who've tried other virtual worlds, but it's got one big difference: it's part of the Internet. News.com.  
2:18 PM:   Google Launches Virtual World Called Lively. Google is launching a new service today called Lively, a browser based virtual world add-on that lets users create and customize avatars and worlds, interact with other users, and generally have a richer social interaction than is offered by GTalk today. 12:10 PM:   Bit.ly: Please Use This TinyURL of the Future. Bit.ly, a new URL shortening service from the innovation network Betaworks, is launching today with a staggering feature set for both end users and forward looking developers. ReadWriteWeb.  
11:16 AM:   Google's Handy Walking Directions To Pick Up Where Ask.com Left Off. Google is testing walking directions on its Maps site -- a once-handy Ask.com feature that no longer exists. Silicon Alley.  
9:12 AM:   Acer rolls out the Aspire X1200 home theater-friendly mini PC for $499. Acer's Aspire X1200, which for $450 includes on-board NVIDIA GeForce 8200 graphics, an AMD Athlon X2 2850e processor, and HDMI port. Acer promises full 7.1-channel audio support as well as the guts to work with H.264, VC1, and MPEG2 and the spunk to output 1080P. The whole shebang comes in a rack-friendly 10.6 x 4.0 x 14.4-inch enclosure. Engadget.

7:59 AM:   Canon's EOS Rebel XS DSLR gets official, a price tag. The camera -- which ships in August -- will clock in at $699.99, and comes bundled with the EF-S18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS zoom lens, rechargeable battery pack and charger, a handful of cables. Engadget.
