Three Scoops, One Week

Saturday, January 20, 1996 by Dave Winer.

It's been a great week!

On Sunday I got the scoop on PointCast Network. On Thursday, Marc Andreessen of Netscape used DaveNet to talk about Java Runtime on the Mac. And today I can point you to a very important new product that you can download right now.

It's Microsoft Internet Explorer for the Macintosh.

You can download it from:

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/mac/macdl.htm

John Ludwig, johnlu@microsoft.com, says: "Sorry no Java yet but we think the browser is pretty good. Comments welcome."

I'm running it right now.

Yes, it is very nice. Has a Claris feel to it. Human factors are much nicer than Netscape. So is performance. It's scriptable, but does not support menu sharing as Netscape does. Haven't checked yet if it can run JavaScript scripts or if Helper Apps work the same.

I wanted to get this news out quickly.

So far: Microsoft's Macintosh act looks really good.

See what I mean about the Macintosh becoming an interesting Internet battleground?

Even better: DaveNet is turning into an interesting Internet battleground!

Cooooool.

Keep 'em coming!

Dave Winer

PS: Frontier users: I just uploaded an install file for Microsoft Internet Explorer.

PPS: John Gilmore, gnu@toad.com writes: "No, it was Blazing Saddles. She has taken the hunky black sheriff upstairs from the dance hall to her room, they're necking on the couch, and she says something like, 'Is it twoo, what they tell me about black men's equipment?' The lights go out. A pause. 'It's twue, it's twue!' The original script followed that with, 'Ma'am, you're holding my arm,' but the censors cut it from the final movie." It's twue, it's twue.
