This was a great ad for Wendy's in 1984.
Clara Peller, the little o ld lady on the right, wants to know where the other burger guys (presumably McDonald's and Burger King) hid the beef. It's true. Their burgers had a lot of lettuce and sauce and bread, but not all that much beef.
"I don't think there's anyone back there," she said.
This became a cultural touchstone. When you thought someone was bullshitting you, you'd say Where's The Beef, and everyone would think of the cute old grandma, and have a nice laugh.
So the question is this -- if you said Where's The Beef to a young person today would they know WTF you're talking about?
