The other night I had a dream that I ran into a programmer I hadn't seen for 20 years. I asked what he was up to, he says Y2K work. Puzzled, one would think all the Y2K bugs had already been shaken out. He said he works for insurance companies. A lot of policies have exclusions for damage caused by Y2K bugs. So they employ consultants to investigate and then testify in court. He was such a consultant, and made a good living at it.

Funny thing: All this happened in my mind. It invented the idea of insurance companies with Y2K exclusions. Yet it hid that idea from my dreaming consciousness, so it could be entertained by the idea.

I don't understand how this could work, how I could be so genuinely surprised.
