It's even worse than it appears..

  • I remember how revolutionary the first web was, but then a series of tech companies took it over and “had their way” with it. #
  • The first was Netscape and they added JavaScript to steal the thunder from “Sun” (a long story). #
  • Then Microsoft crushed Netscape by cutting off their air supply, and they piled up all kinds of nasty insecure features with predictable results, they made the web a paradise of viruses, making it largely unusable until Firefox replaced Microsoft, and their web was nicer, and smaller and they left out the viruses. #
  • Google came along and quickly replaced it with Chrome and all was good for a while, until they decided it was just another corporate platform like Android and threw out all the early sites, so boring, they couldn’t make billions of dollars, and now what used to be the web is all but gone.#
  • What’s next? It’s time for The Big Undo. 😀#
  • The Big Undo came to me while I was writing my new profile on Twitter. It immediately reminded me of three things. #
    • Karl Anthony Towns, Knicks all-star and world champion center, is called Big Bodega. #
    • It sounds like a title of a Michael Lewis book, like The Big Short.#
    • And for some reason Queen Latifah singing When You're Good to Mama in Chicago. #
  • And of course I bought the domain. #

You know those obnoxious sites that pop up dialogs when they think you're about to leave, asking you to subscribe to their email newsletter? Well that won't do for Scripting News readers who are a discerning lot, very loyal, but that wouldn't last long if I did rude stuff like that. So here I am at the bottom of the page quietly encouraging you to sign up for the nightly email. It's got everything from the previous day on Scripting, plus the contents of the linkblog and who knows what else we'll get in there. People really love it. I wish I had done it sooner. And every email has an unsub link so if you want to get out, you can, easily -- no questions asked, and no follow-ups. Go ahead and do it, you won't be sorry! :-)
