DaveNet 1998 Review: Home

1998 was my fourth year of doing DaveNet, and the second year that I did a year-in-review website. I read every piece I wrote this year, and as I was reading, I kept several windows open, and pasted in quotes that link to the pieces. Those windows turned into this website. See the links at the top of the page? Each of them is one thread, one subject that was discussed across much or all of the year.

It's a valuable exercise. It can be painful to go thru the loops again, knowing how things are going to turn out, knowing that some claims will prove too bold. And seeing the loops, the times I've changed my mind -- that's particularly humbling!

But there was some good writing, and there were some good ideas, and there's a direction that I lose at times. It's great to leave a trail, it gives me a way to review in one-year chunks, and consider all the points of view and decide which ones I want to take with me, and which ones I want to leave behind.

1998 was a year of new technology maturing, but there's still a spark of courage to try out new ideas. Power struggles everywhere. People fighting to be heard, to be free, to be rich, to swirl. But there are pockets of people working together, and as long as that's happening there's hope.

So goodbye to 1998 and hello to 1999!
