DaveNet 1998 Review: Government

They won't make it any more difficult for criminals to encrypt messages, but they do make it dangerous for law-abiding computer users like you and me to do serious collaborative work thru the net. When you think it thru, we may already live in a police state. You don't know who's reading and archiving your email. 3/1/98.

Goldwater was a team player, up to a point. When his line of integrity was crossed, he didn't go easily. He said his fellow Republican, Richard Nixon was the most dishonest person he had ever met. Goldwater was the conservative leader who eventually went for abortion rights and gays in the military. He said "All I care about is that they can shoot straight." Right on Barry. 6/1/98.

Sloppily, I assume the FBI is stupid in wanting to keep US software companies, like Microsoft, from building authentication and encryption into every incoming and outgoing net connection. But what if the FBI isn't stupid? What could they trying to accomplish? 6/12/98.

On election day many vote morality, personal qualities and family values, but when the issue turns to indiscreet infidelity and lies to cover it up, when the pollster calls, many think it's an invasive and inappropriate subject. I think it's an important issue, for what it says about us, how thin and contradictory our collective values are. 8/1/98.

Clinton is surely the lamest kind of lame duck now. He's right, it's time to move on. The best way for that to happen is for him to resign. 8/18/98.

Do you blame TV for telling the truth or do you blame the adults for acting like children? 9/14/98.

Public values shift over time. Perhaps the electorate is becoming more adult, and less likely to overlook blatant dishonesty and abuse of power. Or it could be that we collectively elected Clinton so we could examine our own opinions about integrity and truthfulness. 9/16/98.

I would have supported impeachment and removal for his signing the Communication Decency Act, one of the most reprehensible things any president has ever done, in my humble opinion. A high crime and misdemeanor? Absolutely. 9/22/98.

We decided to weed out sexual corruption from our professional lives by criminalizing it. 12/15/98.

If he had a happy sex life I'd be the first to congratulate him. That would be quite an accomplishment. 12/15/98.

The specific charges, perjury and obstruction of justice, are the small picture. The big picture is that we elected a man who has contempt for our intelligence and vision. He depends on us to ignore the blatant contradictions. He lies, it's his lifestyle, and we accept it. No big deal, some say. 12/15/98.

To me the argument isn't between the Democrats and Republicans, it's between the minds of the people and the government. It was just the luck of the draw that a Democrat was in office when the shit hit the fan. I wouldn't read too much into the partisan differences, I actually think they're irrelevant. 12/22/98.

If we're ever going to work together again, there will have to be give on both sides, sooner or later. We'll have to see ourselves as one country, responsible for what we do, no matter what party you belong to or support. 12/28/98.
