DaveNet 1998 Review: Open Source

Netscape did something remarkable today. 1/22/98

Most great programmers insist on getting paid. 1/24/98.

Great programmers are great whether or not they are paid for their work. Lots of programmers say they want to get rich, but the really good ones do it for the juice of creating something wonderful to play with and to express themselves. 2/6/98.

If we want our software to be used, we have to invest in usability. Software design issues become more complex when user interfaces appear. Matters of taste matter less, and the judgement of a designer must take over. Community is a very weak environment for tweaking a user interface to make it more accessible to new users. The community is already up the learning curve. 2/6/98.

Art and money are closely related. Try sitting down with a group of artists and ask them what's on their mind. Very quickly the topic shifts to money. And it can be very hard to get them off that subject. 4/22/98.

If these people really had the interests of their OS at heart, my argument goes, they'd beat me with a feather instead of throwing rocks at me. Rocks hurt but feathers are fun. 4/29/98.

The independence of developers is what the Internet is about. It repositioned the operating system platform vendors as makers of web clients and servers and tool-running systems. And it gave developers an opportunity to be independent of operating system vendors. 5/19/98.
