Agence France-Presse's Chief Editor for North America Peter Mackler on January 7, 2008. Mackler, a veteran of AFP, who covered wars, elections and was the driving power behind transforming the agency's English language service into a global force, has died at 58. Mackler died on June 20 after suffering a heart ailment at the Washington, DC, offices of AFP. Over his nearly 30-year career at AFP, he helped develop the multilingual agency's anglophone service from Paris to the Middle East and Hong Kong.
