INDIA-KASHMIR-POLITICS

(FILES) In this picture taken on May 5, 2008, Chief Minister of Indian-administered Kashmiri Ghulam Nabi Azad (C) walks between lines of policemen during a ceremony marking the first day of the 'Darbar Move' outside the Civil Secretariat complex in Srinagar. Azad announced his resignation on July 7, 2008, after the region was hit by violent protests over the allotment of land to a key Hindu pilgrim trust. The government led by Ghulam Nabi Azad was reduced to minority on June 28 when a key ally Peoples Democratic Party pulled-out of the Congress-led ruling alliance. PDP withdrew after angry protests over transfer of forest land to Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board -- a trust that manages annual pilgrimage to a mountain cave shrine of Amarnath. Six people were killed and over 350 hurt in police firing and violent clashes in Muslim-majority Kashmir valley forcing Azad's government to revoke the order, days after PDP ended its support.
