Federal officials say fugitive hedge-fund swindler Samuel Israel surrendered on July 2, 2008 to authorities. Rebekah Carmichael, a spokeswoman for US Attorney Michael Garcia, said that Israel is in federal custody. She would not immediately provide other details. Israel was sentenced to 20-year jail term in April after pleading guilty to defrauding investors out of over 450 million USD tied to the now-collapsed Bayou hedge funds. A sport utility vehicle (SUV) belonging to Israel was found abandoned on June 09 near the Bear Mountain Bridge which spans the Hudson River in New York state.
