US-AMIMALS-WHALE

Marita Slatner, (R) a veterinary radiologist for the Marine Mammal Conservancy, conducts an ultrasound examination on an adult, female whale June 22, 2008, at the Conservancy in Key Largo, Fla. The whale is identified as either a Gervais beaked whale or a Sowerby's beaked whale, species that hardly ever survive a stranding, according to marine mammal experts. The whale was stranded June 20 off the Florida Keys and was the focus of a U.S. Navy Marine Mammal Program hearing test on Saturday.
