On June 25, 1948, the western wartime Allies began a massive operation which kept divided Berlin's western sectors supplied with food, coal and other provisions during the Soviet blockade, one of the opening salvoes of the Cold War. Germany will play host on June 26, 2008 on the 60th anniversary of the Berlin Airlift to octogenarian former pilots who helped save the embattled western part of the city as the Soviets tried to starve it into submission.
